Ask any workshop owner what hurts most on a busy day, and it is rarely a big breakdown. It is the small stuff — a worn nozzle, damp air, dust on the rails. Here's how ten minutes of daily care keeps your machine cutting clean for years.
Ask any workshop owner what hurts most on a busy day, and it is rarely a big breakdown. It is the small stuff: a worn nozzle that ruins a plate, damp air that makes the arc sputter, dust on the rails that makes the torch wobble at a corner. All of it is easy to prevent with a little routine.
At Shri Shyam Engg Works, we build and service CNC plasma cutting machines for fabrication units, machine shops and heavy engineering plants. Machines that get ten minutes of care a day keep cutting clean for years. Here is what to check and how often.
"A machine that gets ten minutes of care a day will keep cutting clean for years. It's rarely the big breakdown that hurts — it's the small stuff you could have caught in a morning walk-around."
Before you load the first plate, take five minutes to look over the machine. This one habit catches most problems before they become expensive.
Many shops stretch consumables to save money, and it usually backfires. A worn nozzle gives a rough, tapered cut, and a worn electrode can damage the torch itself — which costs far more than the part you were trying to save.
Replace electrode, nozzle and swirl ring together. Mixing a new part with a worn one shortens the life of both.
Replace the electrode once the centre pit is about 1.5 mm deep — check your torch manual for the exact figure.
If the nozzle hole looks oval, chipped or enlarged, replace it immediately — cut quality drops fast.
Bad air causes more cut quality complaints than anything else. Moisture and oil damage torch parts and make the arc unstable — and no amount of new consumables will fix that.
A machine is only as accurate as its motion system. Clean the rails and rack with a dry cloth, lubricate guides as per the maker's schedule, and tighten gantry and motor fasteners every month.
Also watch the torch height control (THC). If the torch dives into the plate or the kerf width keeps changing, recalibrate it. Always recalibrate after changing plate thickness or after a torch crash — this is one of the most commonly skipped steps, and one of the most important.
"Any work inside the power source or control cabinet should be done only by a trained technician with the power off."
| When | What to Do |
|---|---|
| Every day | Check consumables, drain the air filter, wipe rails, check ground clamp, clean the table |
| Every week | Clean the torch and O-rings, check hoses for leaks, clean power source vents |
| Every month | Lubricate guides and rack, tighten fasteners, inspect cables |
| Every 3–6 months | Replace filter elements, check earthing, back up software, get a full service check |
Operators can handle daily and weekly jobs. Power source repairs, controller faults, drive problems, or loss of accuracy even after cleaning are best left to a service engineer.
If you are in Faridabad, Gurugram, Manesar or anywhere in Delhi NCR, our team offers installation and after-sales support. You can also read about our CNC plasma cutting machine in Manesar, Haryana.
A rigid frame, good quality guides and easy access to the torch and cabinet make upkeep much simpler. If you cut both thin sheet and thick plate, a CNC flame and plasma cutting machine lets you use plasma for speed and flame for thick sections.
Many fabricators also choose a CNC plasma and oxy fuel cutting machine for this reason. Tell us your plate thickness and table size, and we will suggest what fits.
